Training Portfolio

During their thesis, each student must validate their training portfolio , composed of about hundred hours of training consisting of about 100 hours of training ( reduced to 50 hours for doctoral students with a teaching mission, in an AHU or CCA position), as stated in article 15 of the decree of 25 May 2016.

In the perspective of setting up a synthesis of skills accumulated during the doctoral training, the decree of May 25, 2016 makes it compulsory for the doctoral student to set up a portfolio, during the thesis period and providing external recognition of his/her experience.

The doctoral student’s training portfolio highlights the skills developed during the doctoral program. It is regularly updated by the PhD student, who has to fill in the Training recap form.

The portfolio is divided into 3 types of modules:

  • Cross-disciplinary
  • Scientific, in the field the thesis project
  • Professional integration and career development

Training in research ethics and scientific integrity is compulsory during the thesis (at least 16 hours).

The ministerial decree of May 25, 2016 makes it compulsory for PhD students to undergo training in research ethics and scientific integrity.

Extract from article 3 of the decree of May 25, 2016 setting the national framework for training and the procedures leading to the award of the national doctoral diploma: “(…) ensure that each doctoral student receives training in research ethics and scientific integrity”.

Objectives of the training modules
  • Extend the scientific culture of the doctoral student in areas outside their thesis
  • Allow the doctoral student to acquire mastery of complementary techniques
  • Help the student for their future integration into working life after the PhD
Financial Assistance

For some courses that are not free of charge, but that fit into the professional project, the Doctoral School may grant partial funding (prior agreement of the management of essential ED) in exceptional cases.

The host laboratory normally covers costs related to training.

Validation of training modules

PhD students must provide the Doctoral School with a certificate of participation  at the end of each training module.

Validation of 100 hours equally distributed between the three types of modules (inter-disciplinary, scientific in the field of the thesis project and professional integration) is a pre-requisite for the thesis defense.

More specifically, when the doctoral student has finalized his training portfolio, he can then send his department administrative manager the training recap form signed, as well as all the certificates of participation. Once the doctoral school executive has approved the training portfolio, the department manager will notify the doctoral student.

Pratical information

A module cannot validate more than 30h and a day of formation equate to 6h.

Only the formation at the animal experimentation would validate 50h.

Participation in congresses is strongly encouraged by the ED and allows to validate 12 hours of training, if the student makes an oral or a poster presentation. Please note that only two congresses can be taken into account during the whole course.

A course taken by the student during his Master’s degree cannot be validated as part of this doctoral training. The Doctoral School encourages doctoral students to take courses other than the ones offered in its own specific professional project.

  • On the website of CFDip you will find a catalog of courses offered to doctoral students with or without teaching mission.
  • Training courses offered by the Paris Descartes libraries are available on the website
  • The Collège de France invites doctoral students to take part in some courses. The request must be made to the ED manager.
